Fellowship Application/Interview Process

Initial Application Phase

Written Application: January 30th (Early Selection); May 7th (Regular Selection)*

The written application consists of an online form1 page resume, personal statement and 2 references. Please click here for more details about the written application (including the personal statement prompt and reference form).

Phone Interview: On a rolling basis once applications are received.

  • Applicants who pass the written application stage will then participate in an individual phone interview conducted by an alumnus or staff. These phone interviews will happen within 3 weeks of the application deadline.

Group Interview & Matching Event

Group Interview: Sunday, February 26th (Early Selection); Saturday, June 2nd (beginning after Shabbat) through Sunday, June 3rd (Regular Selection)*

  • Candidates who pass the phone interview will be invited to an in-person, group interview in Boston.
  • Candidates will participate in workshops and skills trainings and will be evaluated on a number of different criteria.

Matching Event: Monday, June 4th

Between 20 and 25 candidates from the group interview will be selected as finalists.

  • Finalists who are already employed by organizations that have been approved as Placement Organizations are fully accepted into the Fellowship class for the next year, and do not need to attend the Matching Event.
  • Finalists who are already employed in organizing jobs, but whose organizations have not been approved as Placement Organizations, can encourage their organizations to apply to be a placement. These finalists should consult with JOI staff about whether or not they should participate in the Matching Event.
  • Finalists who do not yet have an organizing job will interview with Placement Organizations at the Matching Event in Boston.
  • The finalists who get job offers after the event are then accepted into the Fellowship class for the next year.
  • Finalists that don’t get job offers through the Matching Event are invited to continue looking for organizing jobs in Boston. If they find a job that meets the JOI Placement criteria and their Placement agrees to their participation in the Fellowship, they are also then accepted into the Fellowship class for the next year.

*What’s the Difference Between Early and Regular Selection?

In order to become a member of the Fellowship class, applicants need to both be accepted into the Fellowship program and obtain a job in an approved placement organization. The early selection process allows applicants complete the first step in this process earlier in the year, giving them more time to find an organizing job before the start of the Fellowship. Candidates who are accepted into the Fellowship during early selection will be encouraged to pursue job leads throughout the winter and spring and JOI will support them through the job hunt whenever possible. If accepted candidates have not obtained a job by June 4th, they are welcome to attend the Matching Event to pursue further opportunities.
