WE HEAR YOU!!!
JOI Alumni Discussion Series

After many 1:1’s and conversations, the JOI Alumni Committee has organized a discussion series to get us through the winter.  All of these discussion subjects have come from you and we appreciate your ideas and creativity regarding alumni programming.  We hope you come out for and enjoy this first, in hopefully many, programmatic series!!  SO, SAVE THESE DATES!!!

Spring into Organizing:  Organizing Skills for Non-Organizers
New Date: Monday, April 16th , 2007 7 pm -9 pm

Would you like to use your organizing skills at your non-organizing job but aren’t sure how?  Do you have negative or positive feelings around having a non-organizing job?  Could your volunteer activities benefit from your organizing skills?  This is an opportunity for alums, from all jobs and professions, to discuss their feelings and experiences around organizing.  Some alums remain paid organizers after JOI but the reality is that these jobs are hard to find and maintain. This discussion will focus on how to enable you to utilize your organizing skills in whatever you are doing.  Let’s discuss…Location TBA

Sweeten Your Life with Jewish Ritual

Bagels, Lox & Lefties
Sunday, July 22, 2007 12 noon – 2 pm
Come learn and discuss the history and present state of the Jewish Left, while preparing ourselves for the Tisha B'av fast over brunch!  Are you a Jewish Left history junkie?  Did you always want to know more about historical figures, such as Emma Goldman?  Do you feel that there is a Jewish Left movement?  Do you feel connected to it?  If not, how can we connect this rich history to our present day lives and activism?

*Community Organizing Consultant : Watertown Community Housing

Watertown Community Housing (WCH) is a community development corporation that has promoted, preserved, and developed affordable housing in Watertown since 1991.

WCH seeks a Community Organizing Consultant to engage residents in determining the future of the Pleasant Street Corridor, a primarily industrial area that is adjacent to a mixed income neighborhood. Developers are building over 400 luxury condominiums in the vicinity, and WCH wants to mobilize residents in response to current and future developments.

Between April and December of 2007, the Consultant will:

-          Conduct outreach (1:1 meetings and door-knocking) to neighborhood residents and businesses, involving over 200 residents

-          Plan an event/walking tour to introduce WCH to the neighborhood.

-          Conduct neighborhood/house meetings to identify issues/concerns/opportunities.

-          Help residents develop principles and goals for submission to the Town Council.

-           Prepare a final summary report.

Desired Qualifications:

-          Community organizing experience

-          Meeting facilitation experience

-          Background in community planning/economic development

-          Ability to work evenings and some weekends as required

-          Access to a car

Compensation: Hourly rate commensurate with experience: approximately 100 hours of billable time are expected over an eight month period.

The Consultant will work closely with the WCH Executive Director and several members of the Board of Directors. Responses to this RFQ must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 20th. Send cover letter and resume to Dori Peleg, executive director, dori@watertowncommunityhousing.org.

*Mentoring/Group Program Specialist: Jewish Vocational Service

Summary: Develop innovative and cost-effective strategies to expand a strong Jewish Women’s Mentoring Network (JWMN) that will help build a community, provide support and connections, and help women get started, change, manage or move forward in their careers.  In addition, the Group Program Specialist will identify and recruit volunteers working in various professions to serve as members of Career Moves’ Career Advisory Network (CAN). 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Devise  and implement innovative, cutting-edge strategies to promote access and connection among the participant communities
  • Provide leadership, expertise and ongoing support to program participants
  • Develop outreach programs and marketing strategies to attract and retain participants
  • Attend and/or present on programs at relevant events
  • Continually evaluate and revise programs to increase effectiveness
  • Solicit feedback from program participants
  • Maintain confidentiality in communication with all program participants
  • Staff the JWMN Advisory Committee
  • Assist in designing, scheduling and implementing Career Moves group programs in the community
  • Maintain databases of program participants; produce monthly, quarterly, annual reports
  • Perform administrative support duties as required, including backup reception

Non Essential Functions:

  • Participate in meetings, in-service trainings, committees
  • Actively participate in interagency planning to assure the participants’ needs are being effectively addressed

Requirements:

  • Strong communication, presentation, negotiation and leadership abilities
  • Experience with building and maintaining supportive relationships with volunteer membership
  • Experience organizing and building member involvement
  • Familiarity with organizations in the Boston young adult Jewish community, such as YLD and GesherCity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), use of the Internet and web-based applications
  • Keen attention to detail is a must
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to successfully work in a team environment
  • Flexibility, creativity and a sense of humor
  • Ability to organize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects.
  • Marketing experience a plus

Education Required: Bachelors degree plus 1-3 years experience
