After many 1:1’s and conversations, the JOI Alumni Committee has organized a discussion series to get us through the winter.  All of these discussion subjects have come from you and we appreciate your ideas and creativity regarding alumni programming.  We hope you come out for and enjoy this first, in hopefully many, programmatic series!!  SO, SAVE THESE DATES!!!

Young, Jewish & Left Film Screening and Discussion

A celebration of diversity, Young Jewish and Left weaves queer culture, Jewish Arab history, secular Yiddishkiet, anti-racist analysis, and religious/spiritual traditions into a multi-layered tapestry of Leftist politics.  Personal experiences from many of today’s leading Jewish activists reframe the possibilities of Jewish identity. It presents a fresh and constructive take on race, spirituality, Zionism, queerness, resistance, justice, and liberation. $5

Spring into Organizing:  Organizing Skills for Non-Organizers
Tuesday, March 20, 2007 7 pm -9 pm
Would you like to use your organizing skills at your non-organizing job but aren’t sure how?  Do you have negative or positive feelings around having a non-organizing job?  Could your volunteer activities benefit from your organizing skills?  This is an opportunity for alums, from all jobs and professions, to discuss their feelings and experiences around organizing.  Some alums remain paid organizers after JOI but the reality is that these jobs are hard to find and maintain. The Abortion Access Project (AAP) seeks a visionary, enthusiastic and skilled individual to provide leadership and build collaborations to ensure that safe abortion is accessible to all women in the U.S.  As Director of Field Initiatives, this individual will provide direction and oversight to field-based activities designed to increase the participation of a wide range of health professionals in delivering and connecting women to abortion care.  This is a high visibility position that is national in scope, and provides creative opportunities in one of the most challenging areas of reproductive health care.  

AAP is a nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, established in 1992 by activists and health professionals concerned about the declining numbers of abortion providers.  Our mission is to ensure access to safe abortion for all U.S. womenAAP employs independent field consultants to coordinate state-level project activity to diversify and expand the delivery of abortion care in multiple states across the U.S.  Consultants are employed for their organizing skills, creativity and vision, knowledge of state-level conditions, and connections to key individuals and organizations in the state – each of which contribute to AAP’s unique emphasis on grassroots participation and the development of innovative approaches to increasing accessible abortion care.  AAP also partners with national and state-based organizations to develop and implement project activities toward the achievement of shared goals and is committed to the development of strong, independent leadership at the state and local level.

 Description

The Director of Field Initiatives will provide leadership to AAP’s state field-based efforts to improve access to abortion, identifying opportunities to develop innovative approaches to increase the participation of a wide range of health care providers in delivering and connecting women to abortion care, and overseeing the implementation, assessment and dissemination of model projects.  As a member of AAP’s senior staff, the Field Director also provides significant input regarding AAP’s evolving strategies to ensure that all U.S. women have access to safe abortion.

The Director of Field Initiatives is a full-time, Cambridge/Boston-based position and reports to the Executive Director. 

Responsibilities include:

§         Provide leadership and support to the field team and project partners to establish and achieve annual and long range programmatic goals.

§         Identify and nurture innovative ideas.  Lead the formulation and implementation of model projects relating to AAP’s programmatic priorities in multiple states, assess, identify and disseminate effective practices.

§         Build the field team.  Identify and recruit field consultants and project partners; build effective alliances with key individual and organizational state and national allies.

§         Represent AAP in key forums as designated.

§         Perform additional team responsibilities including but not limited to:

    1. o        Assist with the identification and development of resources to support program growth.  Participate in writing grants, grant reporting, meeting with potential and current funders, as requested.
    2. o        Collaborate with other AAP project directors and staff to ensure coordination of program work.  Attend regular staff meetings.
    3. o        Participate in fundraising, visibility events, Board meetings and other program activities as requested.

 Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position is a highly skilled leader and collaborator.  Required skills, attributes and accomplishments include:

§         A proven track record in the development and coordination of innovative, results-oriented programming in community health or a related field. 

§         Strong existing regional or national networks within reproductive health care, public health and/or abortion service delivery with an emphasis on work within rural and/or low-income populations.  

§                     5 years relevant experience in community health, public health, and/or health service delivery, which include remote field-project management experience and the development, implementation and oversight of multiple projects.  Experience coordinating and/or providing professional education/training for health professionals a plus.

§                     Experience managing multiple projects in a dynamic environment with demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and a strong sense of humor.

§                     Proven ability to actively cultivate, engage and connect diverse people and activities working together toward a common goal, a commitment to coalition building and leadership development and the ability to build trust in individual relationships across distances with a variety of stakeholders.

§                     Persistence, resourcefulness and the ability to identify opportunities and needs and respond to these creatively and flexibly.

§                     Experience working toward long term change in a professional environment.

§                     Excellent written, verbal and telecommunication skills; ability to act as a spokesperson for AAP and its projects as requested.

§                     Comfort with and enthusiasm for regular travel within the U.S.

§         Comfort in a small-team, nonprofit environment.  A skilled motivator and enthusiastic team leader.

§         Commitment to AAP’s core mission, values and programs.
