April Rosenblum, a 27-year-old activist with a long-time commitment to building movements for social justice, makes the case that addressing anti-Semitism is crucial, both for Jews and for everyone who wants to create powerful movements for social justice. Join us to talk about anti-Semitism and how to address it within the Left, while strengthening, not distracting from, our progressive movement building. Sweeten Your Life with Jewish Ritual

Learn how to incorporate Jewish ritual into your every day life & celebrate Shavuot with JOI alums and friends!!!  Even if you are not staying up all night, come eat ice cream and cheesecake with us and share the practices that are important to you. Come learn and discuss the history and present state of the Jewish Left, while preparing ourselves for the Tisha B'av fast over brunch!  Are you a Jewish Left history junkie?  Did you always want to know more about historical figures, such as Emma Goldman?  Do you feel that there is a Jewish Left movement?  Do you feel connected to it?  If not, how can we connect this rich history to our present day lives and activism?

The Boston Workmen’s Circle Shule, a Secular Progressive Jewish Sunday School,
seeks teachers for the 2007-2008 Academic Year. The school teaches Jewish culture, history and values from a non-religious perspective to children ages 6-13 years old. There are 20 classes between September and May. The classes meet on Sunday mornings between 10:30 –12:30 for two hours at 1762 Beacon Street, Brookline, Massachusetts. Summary: 1199SEIU has a vacancy for a Boston based organizer to work as part of an organizing team that is organizing personal care attendants (PCAs) across Massachusetts.  Personal Care Attendants provide care to seniors and people with disabilities in their homes.

Description: The organizer will have primary responsibility for outreach to PCAs and allied community organizations in a specified region of the state. The goal of the position is to build a movement of care providers that can make change in their working conditions. The organizer will help build the union by conducting individual outreach to PCAs, holding small group meetings of PCAs, building committees of PCA activists, and working with PCA’s and community organizations to lobby state legislators about long term care issues.

Requirements:

  • Commitment to social and economic justice
  • Union or community organizing experience
  • Basic computer proficiency and database skills
  • Ability to travel in Massachusetts as needed.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours as needed
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Haitian Creole an asset.

Compensation:1199 offers competitive salaries as well as excellent benefits.
